The Maysles Brothers, Albert and David, are among the most powerful
forces to ever enter the documentary medium, but while David took up editing
duties in the cutting room, Albert was our guide behind the viewfinder into
their particular perspective on reality. Throughout their catalogue, including
Salesman, Gimme Shelter and Grey Garden, both before and after David’s death in
1987, there is no deviation from their verite ethos that “as a documentarian
you are an observe, an author but not a director, a discoverer, not a
controller.”
