I bought an out of print Tartan Asia Extreme copy of this a couple of
years back, having heard about it for a long time. Not only did it introduce me
to the cinema of Shinya Tsukamoto, it still stands as one of the most
extraordinary films I’ve ever seen. It’s a violent and erotic exploration into
the changing relationship between humans and the environment that they live in,
extraordinary shot in black-and-white and featuring some of the most frenetic
editing this side of The Battleship Potemkin. Full of invention, courtesy of
the virtuoso one-man band Tsukamoto (credited as writer, producer, director,
actor, art director, co-cinematographer and editor), this is mesmerizing cinema
as vital today in the twenty-five years since it’s release.
