Although appearing
intermittently in film, Judi Dench was until the mid-1990s known primarily as a
respect stage and television actor in the United Kingdom, before taking on the
role of the head of MI6, M, in the 1995 James Bond film Goldeneye, the first
female in the part. Within five years, she’d picked up three Oscar nominations
(winning for Best Supporting Actress as Queen Elizabeth I in Shakespeare In
Love) and has garnered four further nominations since then, for Iris, Mrs
Henderson Presents, Notes On A Scandal and 2013’s Philomena. Age has not limited
her from becoming one of the most versatile and beloved of screen presences.
